14 SC corrections employees indicted in prison contraband case

COLUMBIA, SC (WSPA) - Fourteen South Carolina Department of Corrections employees were arrested on federal charges on Wednesday related to accepting bribes and bringing in contraband into South Carolina prisons.

Michael Young, Jr., 32, and Vance Volious Jr., 36, were convicted of conspiracy, transport of an explosive with the intent to kill, mailing a non-mailable explosive with the intent to kill, and carrying an explosive during the commission of another felony.

Young, while being held at Broad River Correctional Institution, used a contraband cellphone to run a drug business distributing marijuana, according to evidence at his trial.

Two Spartanburg County brothers were convicted of conspiracy to distribute, distribution of methamphetamine and marijuana and conspiracy to launder drug proceeds.

The US Attorney's Office says the suspects used contraband cellphones and the mail to facilitate drug delivery and distribution from California to Upstate South Carolina.
