Republican Eddie Rispone held a narrow lead over Democrat incumbent John Bel Edwards in Louisiana's gubernatorial runoff Saturday evening, with more than three-quarters of the Pelican State's precincts reporting.
With more than 1.3 million votes cast, Rispone led Edwards by just under 8,300 votes in what was expected to be a close race that has drawn President Trump's close attention.
A FiveThirtyEight average of recent polls shows Edwards holding an average lead of about two percent.
"This Saturday, the eyes of history are looking down on the great people of Louisiana," Trump told rallygoers Thursday in Bossier City.
Democrats, meanwhile, are keen to show that they can win conservative states with the right candidates, and Edwards is certainly a conservative Democrat.
