Multiple people were killed Wednesday when a shooter opened fire at a high school in Parkland, Fla.
Scott Israel, the Broward County sheriff, described the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School as “catastrophic,” and said 14 people were transported to local hospitals with varying degrees of injuries.
Multiple people were pronounced dead, though Israel did not say exactly how many.
“This is a terrible day for Parkland, Broward County, the state of Florida, and the United States,” Israel said during a press conference.
The shooting began just before the high school was set to dismiss students for the day, and the school went into lockdown, according to Broward County Public Schools.
