Queen Elizabeth Meets With Boris Johnson at Buckingham Palace After Conservative Victory

After yesterday's landslide Conservative victory, in which the party won 365 seats, and now hold a majority of 80 in the House of Commons, Queen Elizabeth met with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson this morning at Buckingham Palace, where she formally invited him to form a new government in her name.

Last month, Downing Street announced that if Conservatives were to win the election, the State Opening of Parliament and the Queen's Speech would take place the following Thursday, on December 19, but with "reduced ceremonial elements."

"Should this Prime Minister return, the State Opening of Parliament and the Queen’s Speech will follow on Thursday December 19," a spokesperson said.

"The state opening of Parliament will take place with reduced ceremonial elements, as was the case following the early general election in 2017.

This is due both to the early General Election and the proximity of the state opening to Christmas."
