Team USA goalies can keep Statue of Liberty on their helmets at the Olympics

The International Olympic Committee ruled Tuesday that the United States women’s hockey goalkeepers would be permitted to keep the image of the Statue of Liberty on their goalie masks while competing in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

On Monday, the IOC ordered Team USA goalies Nicole Hensley and Alex Rigsby to remove the image from their helmets because it violated rules that ban “political messaging or slogans related to national identity.”

USA Hockey spokesman Dave Fischer said “discussions were ongoing” between the team and the IOC after they told the team the images would have to be removed because it was too political.

However, the IOC issued a statement through their Twitter account claiming that they never requested the statue be removed from the masks and it was just a “misunderstanding.”

“On the Team USA hockey helmet ‘story’ — there seems to have been a misunderstanding,” a tweet from IOC Media stated.
